How did I not know iFixit was on Mastodon? If you're unfamiliar, iFixit is a company that advocates for Right to Repair and the sale of repairable products. They offer free repair manuals and other information for countless devices, and they sell quality tools and parts to assist in making those repairs and avoiding bad tech. Great outfit, and a font of useful information. Be sure to follow.

Combining pixel art with paper circuits turned out to be a fun way to get kids creative with electronics. Some kids like to copy their favorite emoticons or game art; others go with abstract patterns or come up with their own designs. Never have I ever experienced a kid shying away from the challenge because they think they cannot draw. More about this: voltpaperscissors.com/pixelcub

Special shoutout to the repair site iFixit who are now on the Fediverse, you can follow them at:

➡️ @iFixit

They provide repair forums and free repair guides for phones, computers, consoles, kitchen equipment, tools, medical devices, cars etc. They also review and tear down new gadgets to see how repairable they are.

Repairing your existing stuff is much, much better for the environment than buying replacements.

We. Love. Modular. Ports.

Did you know that MacBooks have modular USB-C ports? All that Thunderbolt speed goes straight through a small press connector. Impressive!

Better yet, if you break a port, your expensive logic board's safe and sound.

Why doesn't every laptop do this?!

This paper circuit project became my all-time favorite for parent-child workshops. It never fails to amaze kids or parents as the result is just fun to use and the build process is easy and straightforward. The idea is quite simple, and you can also repurpose an old PC fan for it. You can check my workshop instructions here: voltpaperscissors.com/spinartr

Hey hey, you thought there be no #nakeddiefriday today? Here we go!

Today's entry is an Infineon/Siemens SAB-C167CR-LM, a microcontroller based on the C166 core. The die is in pleasant-looking pastel colours. :-) The die has pin 1 in top left corner. I'll do a short thread.

Many thanks to @debauer for supplying the samples!

I'm not entirely surprised—I’ve noticed that old digital watches tend to run faster over time. I have a few vintage models from the '70s and '80s that have noticeably picked up speed with age. I always assumed this was due to the natural aging of quartz crystal oscillators, but perhaps there’s more to it than that. Could there be another factor at play?

After my Minecraft Torch paper circuit project, I wanted to invent a circuit that is playful, yet easy to make. The result was this RGB Cube that is controlled by a touch-sensitive paper surface. If you use velostat, a pressure-sensitive variable resistor, you can easily mix any color by varying the amount of pressure. More: voltpaperscissors.com/rgb-touc

silly one day design, I2S DAC for a Rock 5B for fancy audio output.

building an audio player for my dad and he wants something "audiophile" so i put an LDO with <1µV rms noise on it lol

the TAD5212 is still missing a footprint but otherwise it's mostly done. but instead of layouting this i'll do something productive instead :D

Jan Beta makes videos about repairing and restoring old computers and other equipment, especially the Commodore Amiga and C64:

➡️ @jan_beta

There are already over 40 videos uploaded. If they haven't federated to your server yet, you can browse them all at makertube.net/a/jan_beta/video

You can also follow Jan's general social media account at @janbeta

MakerTubeJan BetaHi I'm Jan. I tinker with electronics and enjoy vintage tech, mostly computers and consoles from the 80s and 90s. I also love to tinker with elderly hifi equipment and musical instruments from time...

Glued and soldered everything together. Now it feels like a real device! I'm super happy! Thanks again to everyone who has helped me to get this far! <3

The CO2 Canary is open hardware, you can find all source files here:

I'm planning to write detailed instructions on how to order the required parts, so that you can get one yourself!
